William Baxter was a botanist, particularly interested in cryptogamic botany, active in the 19th century. He was the former curator of the Oxford Physic Garden, as well as a published author and a landscape designer. On 6 May 1825 he was made an associate of the Linnean Society of London. He was also a member of the Botanical Society of London. In 1831 he became Secretary of the Oxford Botanical and Natural History Society. Born in Rugby on 15 January 1787, he died at his home in Oxford, 7 Longwall Street, on 1 November 1871. He left behind an extensive botanical library.
